What's New
That Sneaky Sun!!
Beverly Hills Dermatologist Tells You How To Protect Yourself From The Sun – In Your Office, Your Car, and At The Beach
Skin can be damaged by the sun when it' least expected. It can happen on a cloudy day. It can happen in the dead of winter. You’re always at risk from the sun, whether it's July 4th or New Year's Day.
Christopher Dannaker, founder and medical director of 90210 Dermatology explains, "It has been recognized for some time that not only the traditional tanning rays (UVB) can be damaging to the skin, but also the deeper penetrating UVA rays. But what we now understand that these deeper UVA rays, which unlike their UVB tanning counterpart, can even penetrate through window glass."
In 2007, more than 1 million Americans will be diagnosed with some form of skin cancer and 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer over the course of their lifetime. Dr. Dannaker explains that, "UVA Rays with longer wavelengths penetrate much deeper into the skin and are primarily responsible for wrinkling, loss of skin elasticity and significant aging effects."
As we are spend more time in our cars, uncoated window glass affords little
protection from UVA. A recent report demonstrated a patient working next to
a large pane of glass for decades, always exposing the same side of the face, had 10-15 years of additional ageing effects on the side exposed to sunlight, all due to UVA (Glass filters most of the UVB).
That "sneaky sun" can also cause when you least expect it, so being knowledgeable and taking the appropriate actions is the key to keeping you safe this summer:
- Choose sunscreens that protect you from UVB and UVA rays
- For those that are highly sensitive, opt for "physical" sun blocks or protective clothing
- Learn about some natural alternatives to sun protection
- For those that burn easily, there are oral antioxidants like Heliocare
- Use protective screening on windshields and windows
To reverse sun damage and destroy pre-cancerous changes in the skin while improving tone, texture and even help tighten the skin without surgery, Dr. Dannaker uses a combination of soft lasers to attack existing sun damage.
